An unexpectedly moving comedy about the s#!t we hold onto.
Acclaimed married Second City comedy duo Matt Baram (Umbrella Academy and The Apprentice) and Naomi Snieckus (Disney Zombies; The Handmaid’s Tale) bring their signature mix of storytelling and improvisation from Canada to the Edinburgh Fringe with a heartfelt show about letting go. Big Stuff explores how, in the aftermath of loss or change, we interact with objects that are left behind. Directed by award-winning playwright, director and screenwriter Kat Sandler (Yaga), the charming couple rummage through basement clutter and memories that linger, turning life's big questions into big laughs with quick wit and sharp chemistry.
Drawing on their own personal experiences of the loss of their parents, Baram and Snieckus play versions of themselves, considering the hole that is left behind and the stuff that remains. Big Stuff follows the hilarious tensions between someone eager to clear the clutter and someone desperate to keep or repurpose stuff in the maddest ways. Heavily influenced by the fluidity of improv, the couple gently invites the audience to share their “big stuff,” seamlessly weaving these personal objects into their own story. As they respond in real time to the meaningful items and memories shared each night, no two performances are ever the same.
A hit with audiences and critics alike, Big Stuff premiered to extended sold-out houses at Crow’s Theatre in Toronto and has since toured across Canada. The show has been praised as “one of those pieces of theatre that will stay with you for the rest of your life” (The Globe and Mail), and has garnered award nominations for its unique blend of comedy and emotional depth. Its mix of humour, heart, and audience connection has proven to resonate deeply with diverse audiences, making each performance both personal and universal.
